Community Speedwatch Project
Community Speedwatch in Scotland is a volunteer-led road safety initiative run in partnership with Police Scotland, local community councils, and groups like Neighbourhood Watch Scotland.
How It Works
- Trained Volunteers: Local residents are vetted and trained by Police Scotland to use approved speed-detection equipment in designated 20 mph, 30 mph, and 40 mph zones.
- Team Roles: A typical team of three volunteers splits duties - one operates the speed device, another spots and notes vehicle registration numbers, and a third logs the details.
- Education over Enforcement: Recorded data is passed to Police Scotland, which typically sends advisory warning letters or educational messages to vehicle keepers rather than issuing immediate roadside fines.
- Local Campaigns: Active groups operate across various communities, such as Dunblane Community Speedwatch and schemes in Dunfermline.
Getting Involved
Anyone wishing to join should contact PC Ben Samson via e-mail (ben.samson@scotland.police.uk) and he will provide the necessary forms to completed and then returned to him (and not the e-mailed provided on the form).
Latest News (November 2026)
This project is progressing before Christmas 2026 with new people being onboarded, and with one or more training sessions to be completed. The hope was that the equipment would also be recalibrated before Christmas so that the SpeedWatch events could start early 2027.
